Hello, all. Happy New Year. I hope 2024 is only an improvement on the previous year.

I would be remiss not to say anything about the earthquake(s) that happened yesterday in Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. Here in my bit of Fukui, we had a really scary shake and that's where it ended for us. In Noto and Wajima in Ishikawa, a very large earthquake hit, adding a damaging and deadly chain to an hours-long series of quakes. Homes were destroyed. Lives have been lost. With another quake this morning in the same area, people are unable to breathe easy. I can only offer my concern and hope that the worst is over and those affected can heal.

Update: Information about quakes and tsunami warnings can be found at NHK World-Japan.
